This is the moment a 74-year-old woman slips on one of the thousands of election flyers left covering her street in Brazil and breaks her leg.

The incident took place in the South zone of Sao Paulo in Brazil on 6th October, at around 6:25 am on 10th October.

Local media said local politicians are being prosecuted for "distributing leaflets" by simply plastering the streets with them instead of handing them to potential voters.

The footage, filmed moments before the polls open for the first round of the Sao Paulo municipal elections, shows the elderly woman, named as Dona Hilda Goulart, walking along the street which is covered in political flyers.

She carefully makes her way along the pavement, watching her step so as not to walk in the leaflets, but she arrives at a point where the ground is completely covered in them and while treading on one of them, it slips from under her feet and she takes a nasty fall.

Local media reports said that the woman suffered a fractured femur as a result.

Medics were called to the scene, and Dona was rushed to the Campo Limpo hospital in the South Zone of the city, where medics diagnosed her with a broken leg and provided treatment.

Local media said that placing the leaflets on the ground in such a way is a crime punishable by local laws because it can cause bodily harm to citizens, as was also the case with another woman who broke her leg, named as Silvana do Amaral, 52.

She suffered a fracture to her foot after slipping on the political tracts in front of a school.

Local prosecutors have said that the practice of distributing leaflets this way is banned and have initiated criminal proceedings against a number of political candidates in the city.

The city listed the candidates who have so far been prosecuted for the practice, naming and shaming them.

The long list includes: Ricardo Luis Reis Nunes, the city's current mayor, as well as Rodrigo Goulart, Murillo de Oliveira Lima, Milton Ferreira da Silva, Gabriel Marques de Oliveira Melo, Major Marcio das Neves Palumbo, Andre Luiz Santos Esteves, Jorge Wilson Junior, Andre Jose de Souza, Leo Aquilla, Zilu de Almeida Camargo, General Peternelli, Solange Fernandes de Lima, Ramirez Augusto Lopes Tosta, Marcio Aparecido dos Santos, Colonel Jose Roberto de Castro and Souza Santos.
