Hot air balloon crashes into radio tower at event in New Mexico
A hot air balloon crashed into a radio tower at an international event in New Mexico.
Footage captured by photographer Curt Fargo shows the AM radio station's antenna collapsing after being struck by the gas balloon during the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta on October 11.
The balloon, named Blue Moon and piloted by Dan Ewer from Tucson, Arizona, continued its flight after the collision and landed safely. Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Carhart confirmed no injuries were reported among the three occupants.
The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into this recent incident.
Earlier this week, another balloon collided with a power line in Albuquerque on the festival's third day, causing nearly 13,000 consumers to lose power for almost an hour.
In 2004, another balloon struck the same tower, which transmits signals to local radio station KKOB-AM, during the festival. That incident led to a dramatic rescue of the pilot and two children on board.
The fiesta is one of the most famous events in the region, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to New Mexico to see over 100 brightly colored balloons in various shapes.
