In the wake of a devastating oil spill off the coast of Peru, we investigate the compounded crises facing the region. Focusing on the impoverished area of Ventanilla, where crime and poverty are rampant, we uncover the stark reality of the local communities’ struggles. What we discovered that some of the most impoverished areas of Peru, actually play a critical role in the health of a major biological phenomenon known as the Humboldt Current. The locals here live right along the coast where this current travels, and they are immersed in a wide diversity of marine life. Unfortunately, due to lack of education, many of the locals are unaware of their impact on this current which feeds life into the Galapagos Islands.
