STORYLINE:

China's shipbuilding industry reinforced its world-leading position with significant growth in the first three quarters of this year, according to data recently released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

From January to September, China completed shipbuilding projects totaling 36.34 million deadweight tonnes (DWT), an increase of 18.2 percent compared to the same period last year. New orders surged to 87.11 million DWT, reflecting a remarkable year-on-year growth of 51.9 percent. By the end of September, the order book stood at 193.3 million DWT, up 44.3 percent from the previous year.

MIIT data demonstrate China's dominant position in the global shipbuilding market. In the first three quarters of this year, the country's shipbuilding completions, new orders, and order book as measured by DWT accounted for 55.1 percent, 74.7 percent, and 61.4 percent of global totals, respectively.
