Chinese patrol vessel cruises near Taiwan Coast Guard ship
A Chinese patrol vessel was seen sailing near a Taiwan Coast Guard ship as Beijing conducted war games around Taiwan.
Video shows Taiwan Coast Guards sending a radio challenge to the Chinese vessel with bow number 14602 spotted cruising off Taiwan on October 14.
Taiwan said it detected 125 planes and 34 naval vessels around the island on Monday.
Taiwan officials said China's brazen show of military force came as 'punishment' for Taiwanese President William Lai's speech in which he vowed to 'resist annexation' and 'encroachment upon our sovereignty'.
Taiwan Defence Ministry Spokesman Sun Li-fang said in a statement: 'The irrational provocative military drills carried out by the People's Liberation Army will not only endanger the security situation in the Taiwan Strait, it is also not conducive to the healthy development of cross-strait relations. It seriously undermines the security situation and threatens rule-based order.
'Taiwan is keeping close eyes on movements of China's rocket force, alert posture raised on outlying islands and aircraft. Ships have been responding to the hostile situation in accordance with the rules of engagement.'
Senior Captain Li Xi, spokesman for the Chinese People's Liberation Army, said the exercise were conducted 'to test the integrated joint operation capabilities' of the Eastern Theater Command.
Though it is officially known as the 'Republic of China,' Taiwan has been governed separately from mainland China, which is known as the 'People's Republic of China.'
Unlike China, Taiwan has elections and high levels of human rights that meet international standards. But Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province and has, in recent years, stepped up pressure - both economic and military - to stake its territorial claims on the island.
Communist chiefs are also said to be drawn by the lucrative semiconductor industry in Taiwan, which provides vital components to the West, potentially giving the CCP power over America if they were to bring chip production under state control.
