Drunk Dutchman hurls fan at Thai bar girl 'who shortchanged him'
A drunk Dutchman hurled a fan at a bar girl he believed had shortchanged him.
Max, 59, from the Netherlands, had been drinking with friends before an argument ensued when it was time to pay at the Sky Blue Cafe in Udon Thani province, Thailand, on October 13.
He was asked for 870 baht (19.96 GBP) and gave the cashier 1,000 baht (22.94 GBP). However, the foreign resident threw a fit when he demanded his change, but the employee told him she had already given him his money.
CCTV footage shows Max shouting at the female servers and cashier. He walked over to the table where his companion was seated and swept the glasses and ashtrays. He was with a British friend identified as Lee during the commotion.
The Dutchman yanked a stand fan with one hand and threw it to the women who dodged away, with owner Wasittee Lachon, 39, talking to him.
Only seconds later, he took another fan to hurl across the room, which allegedly injured the owner, Wasittee.
The expatriate, who has been living in the Southeast Asian country for 24 years and married to a Thai woman, shouted in English and Thai: 'Money, money. Why don't you give me my change?'
The shaken bar owner said: 'He was drunk and went on a rampage over 130 baht (2.99 GBP). I called the tourist police, and they went to my store to survey the damage. I lost two fans, a damaged power strip, broken glasses and an ashtray.'
The cashier Paveena Piansabai, 34, whom Max first had an argument with said: 'I told him that I already gave him his change but his friend in the black shirt took it.
'I have never faced any incident like this after working for two years.'
Police later summoned the Dutchman for questioning.
Tourist Police Division 2 Police Lieutenant Colonel Prabda Suksontree said: 'We called Max and his wife at Mueang Udon Thani Police Station as well as Wasittee and her cashier Paveena.
'They negotiated the compensation costs for damage but could not reach an agreement. Max asked to see the damage first.'
However, after the meeting, Max reportedly admitted to his fault.
Wasittee said: 'I wanted him to apologise first of all and pay for the damages in my shop. I want him to respect the law if he intends to stay in Thailand.
'I will only forgive him if he does that. He is a violent man. He is a threat to society.'
The police officer added that the damage would be assessed before summoning both camps again for further legal action.
He said: 'They have negotiated but we will still assess all damages and call them again for another inquiry. We will then proceed with legal action.'
