A fire ripped through a smelter in Indonesia on Monday, accompanied by two loud explosions.

Footage shows the blaze consuming the single-line copper concentrate processing plant at around 5:45 pm on October 14.

The flames reportedly erupted at Freeport Indonesia's smelter factory in the Java Integrated Industrial Port and Estate (JIIPE) Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Gresik, East Java, followed by explosions shortly after.

The insident sparked panic among hundreds of employees, many of whom evacuated the area.

Katri Krisnati, Freeport Indonesia's VP of Corporate Communications, confirmed the incident: 'A fire has broken out at the smelter plant. Freeport Indonesia's emergency response team quickly took action and is currently working to extinguish the flame.'

She confirmed there were no casualties following the fire.

Authorities indicated that the fire is believed to have originated in the boiler area. The management has not yet assessed the extent of the material losses resulting from the blaze.

President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo inaugurated the 60 trillion Indonesian Rupiah (3.68 billion USD) smelter facility on September 24.

It commenced operations on June 27 and has an input capacity of 1.7 million tons of copper concentrate. It is expected to produce around 650,000 tons of copper cathodes each year, 50 tons of gold, and 210 tons of silver. It is expected to achieve total capacity by December 2024.

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is an affiliated mineral mining company of Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) and Mining Industry Indonesia (MIND ID). PTFI mines and processes ores to produce concentrates containing copper, gold, and silver.

The country's largest copper mine is the Grasberg block cave mine, located in Papua and owned by FCX subsidiary PTFI. It is ranked 7th among the top 10 copper-producing countries, as the US Geological Survey reported.
