Heavy floods submerged homes and killed one villager in southern Thailand.

Torrential rains triggered a deluge that swept away houses and caused landslides in Yala province on October 12.

Resident Kodey Lubaji, 66, was found drowned in the basement of his home located on the banks of a canal.

Authorities said at least 10 houses were destroyed, including one that was swept away by floodwaters.

Maroyi Deuramae, 46, whose home was washed away, said: 'It was raining heavily the night before. We were lucky that we already evacuated before the floods hit.'

Betong district chief Amorn Chumchuay said officials were distributing aid and cleaning the aftermath of the flood. However, fallen trees and muddy roads were hampering rescue and relief efforts.

The Thai Meteorological Department warned of continued rainfall across southern Thailand. Locals were urged to be vigilant of flash floods, forest runoff, and strong waves along the Gulf of Thailand.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
