This is the terrifying moment a tornado tore through homes in Indonesia.

Footage shows howling winds blitzing a wooden house during a storm in Yogyakarta in the Gunung Kidul Regency on October 13.

Villagers screamed as the twister dismantled the roof and walls of the rural home.

Authorities said at least 12 houses were damaged by the tornado.

Candirejo Village Head Agus Supriyadi said: 'The heavy rain and strong winds lasted for about half an hour. The tornado hit people's houses. One house collapsed and many others were damaged.'

Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
