On the afternoon of October 14, a cargo ship crane accident occurred at Keelung Port in Taiwan. A cargo ship named "Yuzhou Qihang," while transporting new gantry cranes into the port, accidentally knocked down an old gantry crane on the dock, causing the crane to collapse.

The "Yuzhou Qihang," a heavy cargo transport vessel operated by Hainan Yuzhou International Shipping Co., Ltd., was carrying three new gantry cranes that day and was scheduled to unload one of them at Berth 20 on the west side of the port.

Preliminary investigations indicate that before the accident, the ship was traveling at a speed of 1.9 knots, which did not trigger any speed warnings. However, during the docking process, the tail end of one of the new gantry cranes on the ship accidentally struck an old gantry crane on the dock, causing it to collapse with a loud noise.

Following the accident, the Keelung Port Police Corps and port firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, and after search and rescue efforts, no casualties were reported.

According to initial estimates from the Keelung Port Company, the accident may have caused economic losses exceeding £7m.

In addition, the accident has disrupted cargo operations at Berths 20 and 21 in Keelung Port. To manage the situation, ships that were scheduled to unload gantry cranes at these two berths have been redirected to Berth 19 or other available docks for operations.

Song Yijin, deputy general manager of the Keelung Port Company, stated that all gantry cranes on the dock had been moved aside, and the reason for the collision remains under investigation.

As for compensation, since multiple parties are involved, professional evaluations will be conducted to determine responsibility, after which the port and shipping company will negotiate compensation.

At present, the Keelung Port Authority and related units are continuing to investigate the specific cause of the accident.
