Province of Isernia, Italy - October 14, 2024

In a dramatic and hazardous incident, emergency services in Isernia, Italy, were mobilized for over 20 hours to manage the aftermath of an overturned tanker truck carrying 28,000 liters of sulfuric acid. The accident occurred on the SS85 highway, between the Isernia Nord and Isernia Centro exits, starting from the late morning of October 14, 2024, and stretching into the following day.

The Isernia Fire Department, alongside the local NBCR (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Radiological) unit, was on the scene to handle the crisis. The severity of the incident necessitated additional support from the NBCR specialists from the Bari command, who are trained in the delicate task of transferring hazardous materials.

The operation involved not only securing the area but also transferring the potent acid from the overturned tanker, a task carried out with the cooperation of the transport company. Sulfuric acid, known for its corrosive and highly reactive properties, posed a significant risk to both human safety and the environment, making the intervention of such specialized units critical.
