US: Seattle Officers Pull Man from Path of Oncoming Train in Last-Second Rescue
Seattle, United States - October 07, 2024
In a daring rescue last Friday, October 7th, at 9:16 p.m., Seattle police officers heroically saved a man from certain death on the downtown train tracks. The incident unfolded near the 2nd Avenue Exit and East Jackson Street, where the man, in the midst of a mental health crisis, was perched precariously on a ledge high above the tracks.
Attempting to deescalate the situation and ensure the man's safety, officers engaged him in conversation, urging him to move back from the edge. Despite requests to halt trains, one was already en route when the situation escalated. Tragedy loomed closer as the man lost his balance, plummeting approximately 25 feet onto the rocky bed below, sustaining serious injuries that left him immobilized.
With a train barreling towards them, officers on the lower platform did not hesitate. One officer, showing extraordinary bravery, dashed across the tracks, reaching the injured man just in time. With the train bearing down, he managed to drag the man clear of the tracks mere seconds before impact, risking his own life in the process.
The 57-year-old man, who suffered multiple fractures, was immediately attended to by the Seattle Fire Department. He was rushed in critical condition to Harborview Medical Center, where he received urgent medical care.
