A cow with a rope cutting into its neck was rescued in India.

Footage shows the distressed cattle brutally restrained by a cable near the Shahdol Madhya Pradesh Medical College on October 15.

The Atal Kamdhenu Gau Sewa Sansthan team, led by the NGO's chairman, Gaurav Mishra, assisted in the recovery with the help of cow caretaker Prakash Sen Ajay Sondhiya.

They were able to catch the animal and cut the cord that was constricting it, revealing a large wound on its skin.

The group provided necessary treatment, and the bovine was subsequently transferred to an institute for further care.

In India, devout locals follow Hindu customs, with cows regarded as sacred animals that cannot be eaten or slaughtered once they have stopped producing milk. The majority of states ban the sale or slaughter of cows.

Instead of dealing with the economic burden of keeping their spent cattle, many farmers let the beasts roam the streets - leading to chaos when the animals become agitated and turn their fury on humans.
