This is the terrifying moment tourists were stuck on a railway as a train approached in Cambodia.

Holidaymakers decided to experience the famous Bamboo Train, also known as Norries, but they encountered a train operating on the main track behind them in Battambang on October 11.

Footage shows the bamboo train operators removing the platform and the detachable wheels as the train advances at them.

Upon seeing the group manoeuvring slowly on the track, the oncoming train driver halted in front of them.

The foreigners aboard the platform immediately stepped off, with one of them almost being hit by the heavy plank.

They reportedly did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.

Bamboo train rides are a popular attraction in the remote region.

However, the Royal Railway of Cambodia advises tourists not to ride on the makeshift carriage for safety reasons, as it is illegal and unsafe. It could lead to fatalities, injuries, and accidents involving train operations.

The management said: 'We encourage everyone to use and support our passenger service for far better safety, along with the opportunity to witness Cambodia's scenic beauty of mountains, forests, and rural areas.'

The ride lasts 40 minutes in total, with 20 minutes each way and a 20-minute stop in the middle of the track, at a small village where passengers can buy clothes and drinks.

Traveller Jack Bolton explained that after the Khmer Rouge devastated Cambodia and its railways, Norries were built as a new form of transport. The villagers used leftover truck parts from the war and fitted them to the railroad, making it easier to transport goods and people.
