US: Police Thwart Attempted Explosive Attack
Bellevue, United States - October 12, 2024
In a heart-stopping series of events on I-90, Bellevue Police Officers, along with Washington State Patrol Troopers, heroically intervened to prevent a potentially catastrophic situation. The body-worn camera footage, released by the Bellevue Police Department, captures the intense moments leading up to the arrest of 42-year-old Sokphana Soeung, who was discovered attempting to light an improvised explosive device (IED).
The video begins with officers rapidly exiting their vehicles in pursuit of Soeung, who had fled on foot after driving a stolen black Mercedes sedan. As officers closed in, the footage slows to frame-by-frame detail, showing Soeung turning abruptly, trying to ignite what was later identified as an IED.
In a critical split second, an officer tackled Soeung, resulting in the IED being dislodged and thrown clear of immediate danger. This action, executed with precision under immense pressure, was instrumental in preventing the device from exploding.
The moment of apprehension was fraught with confusion as officers initially shouted about a knife, only to realize the true threat of the IED. After securing Soeung, officers quickly moved him away from the explosive, demonstrating their training in managing hazardous materials and high-risk situations.
Throughout the incident, communication was key, with officers promptly notifying each other and dispatch about the presence of the explosive, ensuring the safety of all involved. The scene concluded with officers moving to a safe distance, calling in the bomb squad to handle the neutralization of the device.
Chief of Police Wendell Shirley commended the officers involved, highlighting the courage and professionalism that prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. The incident not only showcases the daily risks faced by law enforcement but also their commitment to protecting the community under the most extenuating circumstances.
