Los Angeles, United States - October 20, 2024

10/20/2024 04:23 pm (GMT-0700) | NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles City firefighters were dispatched to a large outdoor fire shortly before 4 p.m. in the 11100 block of Vanowen Street.
Upon arrival, crews requested additional resources, according to Capt. Adam VanGerpen of the LAFD public information office.
“This was visible all over the valley,” VanGerpen said. “This put a very thick black smoke. That was because they're doing a lot of movie props here. There's a lot of fiberglass. The fiberglass is what puts off the massive amount of smoke.”
Burbank Airport Fire Department joined the firefight as a large plume of black smoke began to blanket the San Fernando Valley’s border between the cities of Burbank and Los Angeles.
Airport crash trucks, the oversized florescent-colored firefighting apparatus typically seen battling plane crash fires, augmented the resources firefighters had on hand, VanGerpen said.
“They have 1,500 gallons of water,” he said. “They can mix it with foam. So they were called out in case we needed them.”
Fifty-five firefighters battled the blaze for four minutes shy of an hour.
“We used heavy streams on this,” VanGerpen said. “We protected all the exposures around there. So the buildings that were surrounded by this were all protected. So this was basically contained just to an outside fire, but that thick black smoke is what all the residents saw all across the valley.”
The captain said the fire involved a series of large fiberglass movie props in an outdoor storage area.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
