Power bank bursts into flames at airport in China
This is the dramatic moment a power bank burst into flames at an airport in China.
A bag belonging to one of the passengers who had just arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport caught fire on October 20.
Footage shows the backpack burning on the ground, emitting thick smoke all over the corridor.
A traveller, Phoebe, said that she looked back at the bridge and saw that a passenger's backpack was smoking.
'I told the man next to me that he must have a lithium battery in his bag, and if it was about to catch fire, he should hurry up and get a fire extinguisher,' she added.
Local media reported that the ground staff immediately extinguished the fire. No one was reportedly injured in the incident.
In August 2015, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) issued a memorandum to re-emphasise the Regulations of Civil Aviation regarding passengers carrying 'power banks' on flights due to frequent fire-related incidents from the devices.
Passengers and crew are prohibited from carrying power banks with a rated energy of more than 160Wh.
The consumer product safety office advises individuals to keep the power bank in a cool and dry place away from heat sources, moisture, and dust. Avoid leaving the power bank in places with high temperatures, such as cars parked under the sun.
