Workers trapped in building collapse, homes under water, as record rain lashes Bengaluru
A building under construction in Bengaluru's Babusapalya collapsed on 22nd October due to heavy rainfall, trapping at least 17 workers beneath the debris. According to some news reports, one person has also been declared dead. Emergency services quickly arrived at the site to commence rescue operations, as Bengaluru continues to face severe weather conditions. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are actively searching for the trapped workers.
The building was located at Anjanadri Layout, Horamavu Agara, near Hennur in Bengaluru.
Rescue operations began soon after the incident and firefighters as well as local authorities are working hard to find and save the workers. The city has been grappling with relentless rainfall for three consecutive days, leading to widespread flooding and disruption
Severe Weather and Flooding Conditions
Bengaluru has faced record-breaking rainfall recently, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting an astounding 186.2 mm of rain recorded at the GKVK observatory until 8:30 am on Sunday, surpassing the previous highest 24-hour record of 178.9 mm set on October 1, 1997. The ongoing downpour has severely affected public life, particularly in northern Bengaluru.
Areas such as Yelahanka and Doddabommasandra Lake have been inundated, resulting in significant waterlogging and prompting authorities to deploy five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for rescue and evacuation efforts.
