South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, said China and South Africa have established ties based on mutual trust and benefit, with the southern African nation welcoming more Chinese investment and cooperation.

Ahead of this year's highly anticipated BRICS summit, Lamola spoke highly of the China-South Africa all-round strategic cooperative partnership in the new era, during an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN).

BRICS is the acronym for an emerging-market cooperative mechanism that initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In January, it expanded its membership to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia.

The upcoming 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan will be the first since this significant expansion.

"It is a relationship of trust, which is mutually beneficial. With the Chinese companies having invested a lot in our country, we are looking at the benefits for our country, value add in South Africa and also local manufacturing, which we believe can help drive our economy. And as South Africa is a gateway to the African continent, companies that invest in our country also have access to the continent as a whole. So we continue to welcome and invite Chinese companies to continue to invest in South Africa. They found it a very good, friendly business environment which they continue to participate in.";
