Chinese-invested Swakop Uranium's Husab Mine in Namibia has been praised for its environmental stewardship and contributions to the country's economy.
During the launch of the mine's 2023 sustainability report on Monday in Windhoek, the Namibian capital, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Jenelly Matundu praised the company's achievements in areas such as energy use, uranium stewardship, and land use.
According to Matundu, during the period under review, Swakop Uranium managed to achieve significant milestones including a National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) 4-star safety rating, substantial contributions to the national gross domestic product, and leadership in mining excellence through innovative techniques.
She said that the company created 6,000 direct and indirect jobs in 2023 alone, injecting about 363 million U.S. dollars into the local economy through procurement, taxes, and social investments.
During the launch event, Gao Ligang, president of China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), said the report showcases how Swakop Uranium is setting the standard for responsible mining.
Gao stressed the commitment to improving the lives of Namibian people through job creation, local procurement, and community engagement.
