China has been a driving force that promotes the BRICS cooperation mechanism, Ezzat Saad, director of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, has said.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): EZZAT SAAD, Director of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs
"China is a driving force behind BRICS cooperation and was the one to take the initiative in establishing BRICS+ as a mechanism for coordination among the five founding member states and for opening the way for new countries that may join later. The BRICS follows a set of principles that include equality, mutual respect, and international cooperation based on fairness. The values upheld by BRICS resonate with countries in the Global South."
Saad said there is a growing number of requests for joining BRICS. He cited Egypt as an example of the countries that benefited from their interaction with BRICS before officially joining it.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): EZZAT SAAD, Director of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs
"Egypt had benefited from its interaction with BRICS prior to officially joining. Egypt has benefited from joining the New Development Bank (NDB) and from bilateral relations with BRICS countries, particularly in health with China, increased cooperation with India, and trade with Russia. There is a growing number of requests to join BRICS. This reflects a growing resentment toward Western hegemony, hypocrisy, double standards and disregard for multilateralism and UN principles."
