Missing boy swept away by wave crash in Indonesia found dead on fifth day of searching
A missing student swept away by waves was found dead off an Indonesian beach on the fifth day of searching.
The body of Roni Josua Simanjuntak, 20, was retrieved by authorities off Karang Payung Beach in Tulungagung Regency, East Java, on October 18.
A fisherman had found the corpse drifting face-down in the water and reported the discovery to the police.
Nanang Pujo, coordinator of the Trenggalek search and rescue office, said: 'We immediately mobilised a team to go to the site where the body was discovered, approximately 14 miles away from where he disappeared. Based on the physical characteristics, his family positively identified him as the missing boy.'
The body was taken to the RSUD dr. Iskak Tulungagung Hospital.
Roni, from North Sumatra, had been standing on wet rocks with several friends when the wave crashed into boulders sending whitewater rushing inwards at the Kedung Tumpang Beach in Tulungagung on October 13.
His friends, perched on the cliffs above, had laughed before realising the horror of the situation as the ocean dragged their pal out of the lagoon and into the open sea.
Rescue teams were dispatched to find him but high waves and choppy seas had impeded the search.
Kedung Tumpang Beach in Tulungagung, East Java, is known for its striking coastal scenery of natural rock pools and lagoons. Instead of long sandy shores stretching across the coast, it has rugged rock formations and tidal pools.
However, the beautiful terrain is also dangerous during the high tide, when the churning waters can roll in and drag unsuspecting visitors into deeper waters.
In 2016, two tourists, Aris and Imam, both 25, were also washed away by a wave while taking selfies at the same beach.
