STORYLINE:

The first International Academic Conference of the Four Treatises of Tibetan Medicine was held last week in Lhasa, capital of China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

More than 200 experts and scholars from both home and abroad gathered for the event.

Written between the eighth and 12th centuries, the "Four Treatises of Tibetan Medicine" is the most influential foundational work in Tibetan medicine.

It comprehensively reflects the historical trajectory of the development of Tibetan medicine and has played an important role in the development of the field across the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and the trans-Himalayan and Mongolian regions.

The work has been included on the Chinese archival document heritage list and the UNESCO International Memory of the World Register, making it one of the treasures of China's traditional culture.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JOHN VINCENT BELLEZZA, Senior research fellow in University of Virginia
"I think such a large and important forum like this is very important for the development of Tibetan medicine.
Tibetan medicine is a very old tradition. It has been helping Tibetans and other people for many centuries, if not thousands of years.
I have to really give the government, the Chinese government credit for preserving the Four Treatises of Tibetan Medicine. So the government is doing a tremendous job. They have collected medical texts from all over Tibetan regions over the last several years, thousands of texts."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): AMIT MAN JOSHI, Nepal Ayurveda Research and Training Center
"The conference actually helps the Tibetan medicine because it's such an international platform. So this can integrate us, to share our opinions.
I see the central government has helped a lot in the development of infrastructures as well as promoting the Tibetan medicine, along with the traditional Chinese medicine."
