US: Chinese envoy calls on Haitian parties to advance political process
New York, United States - October 22, 2024
A Chinese envoy on Tuesday called on the Haitian authorities and various parties and factions to advance the political process in the country.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council meeting on Haiti's situation, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, said that Haiti is deeply mired in multiple crises, and the situation in the country continues to deteriorate.
He emphasized that the fundamental solution lies in advancing the political process.
Geng said that it is crucial to advance the political process and promptly establish a legitimate, responsible, and effective government. Advancing a Haitian-led, Haitian-owned political process is the fundamental solution to the crisis in Haiti. In addition, efforts must be continuously be made to combat gang violence and improve the humanitarian situation.
Geng also stressed that China is willing to work with the international community to support Haiti in continuously strengthening its own mechanisms and capacity building, accumulating favorable conditions for overcoming difficulties and gradually achieving peace, stability, and development.

"Under the combined influence of political and security crises, the humanitarian situation in Haiti is increasingly deteriorating, with half of the population being caught in a food crisis, a total of 700,000 people being displaced so far and People's livelihoods becoming unsustainable. Vulnerable groups like women are facing severe hardship. Children, who should be the hope of the nation, are now deprived of their homes and their right to education by gang violence and are even forced to take up arms and join gangs. China expresses deep sympathies to the tragic situation of the Haitian people and hopes that the Haitian authorities will increase investment in people's livelihoods and enhance the protection of civilians, especially the vulnerable groups.";
