Roswell, United States - October 19, 2024

A record-breaking storm unleashed chaos over the weekend, dumping 5.78 inches of rain on Saturday, shattering a 1901 record and triggering devastating flash floods. Two people were confirmed dead, and nearly 300 were rescued from rising waters as the Spring River channel overflowed, submerging streets and sweeping vehicles away.

The New Mexico National Guard and local authorities scrambled to assist stranded residents, with some seeking refuge on car rooftops. The deluge forced road closures, shuttered the city's airport, and damaged bridges. Emergency shelters were established at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairground as search efforts continued.

With water levels still high and debris littering the streets, officials urged residents to stay indoors and warned of further risks. The National Weather Service anticipated a 40% chance of more rain Sunday night, keeping the town on high alert.
