Brave grandmother, 67, fends off alleged rape attack in her home
A brave grandmother fended off an alleged would-be rapist said to have attacked her at home in Thailand.
Lamphong, 67, was staying alone at her house near a rice field when the drunk suspect, Sommai, reportedly barged in and molested her in Nong Khai province at around 11 pm on October 17.
The quick-thinking pensioner said she managed to escape the man's advances by feigning chest pains. She claimed she pretended to get her heart medicine before locking herself inside the bathroom to call authorities to tell them there was a man trying to rape her in her home.
Police soon arrived at the residence to arrest Sommai, who was caught hiding behind a tree in only a towel.
The suspect was hauled to the police station. He claimed to have been intoxicated with no idea what he had done. He also apologised and promised to behave.
The alleged attempted rapist was released on bail just three days later on October 20.
Lamphong said she was terrified there would be another attack.
She said: 'My mental state is terrible. I am constantly paranoid that he will attack me again. I already told my children I can't take it anymore, I am so scared that he is roaming free. I want him to be thrown behind bars.
'I am too afraid to even leave the house because I am always alone. I hope the police listen to my concerns.'
Lamphong's son Wittaya, 41, said he lives in a different province for business, and his mother did not want to move with him.
He said: 'I want the man's bail to be revoked and the case to be reconsidered as soon as possible. If he is allowed to walk free, he might do something else, not only to my mother, but also to other women.'
Police Lieutenant Colonel Surasak Dankaew of the Phon Phisai Police Station visited the pensioner on October 22 to explain why Sommai was granted bail.
He said: 'Granting bail or temporary release is the power of the court. If the accused violates the bail conditions, we can put him in jail. We are working to finish the investigation. I would like to ask the village headman to inform us immediately if the bail conditions are breached.'
He added that Sommai will be charged with 'committing indecent acts with a person over the age of fifteen without proper reason'.
The suspect was required to report to the village headman every 15 days.
