STORYLINE:
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Wednesday called for a diplomatic solution to the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel upon her arrival in the Lebanese capital Beirut.
Warning that Lebanon is on the verge of collapse, Baerbock said, "now we need to work with our partners in the United States, Europe, and the Arab world to find a viable diplomatic solution that safeguards the legitimate security interests of both Israel and Lebanon."
"The key to peace is the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701," the German minister said.
Baerbock urged all parties involved in the conflict to protect the United Nations (UN) peacekeepers positioned in the Israeli-Lebanese border region. "Any deliberate attack on UN peacekeepers violates international humanitarian law," she said.
Baerbock met with Lebanese Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri and other Lebanese officials during her trip, local media reported.
The visit was Baerbock's first trip to Lebanon since Israel escalated its conflict with Hezbollah in September, launching a ground offensive into southern Lebanon and a wave of airstrikes in Beirut.
