A major renovation is taking place for the 2025 season, to one of Britain's most iconic Island homes. Towan Island is perched precariously on a sea stack 70 feet above the Ocean. The only access via a private 90 foot suspension bridge built in 1910. The island was first sold in 1838 to the Billing brothers, who kept chickens and grew potatoes there. The island was accessed by a path cut into the rock. The island's house was built in 1910 and has been owned by many notable people, including Sir Oliver Lodge, the inventor of the spark plug.
one owner conducted seances and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is believed to have attended. Workmen and delivery people have to grin and heave as nothing arrives without a good deal of physical effort. It is possible to rent the Island home for holidays, a week here at peak season in 2025 is nearly £6,000. So both a head for heights and deep pockets are qualifiers for a unique stay.
