Tourist killed while taking selfies at notorious Bali social media spot Angel's Billabong
A tourist was washed away by a wave and drowned while taking a selfie at a notorious beauty spot in Bali, Indonesia.
Businessman Nilesh Mukhi, 59, was with his wife taking pictures on rocky cliffs at Angel's Billabong when a huge wave crashed into them on the morning of October 16.
Footage shows the swell hitting the cliff and drenching tourists who were standing near the edge - despite warnings from tour guides about the high number of deaths at the location.
The receding whitewater reportedly dragged Nilesh, from India, and his wife from the precipice. He was said to have been swept out to sea, while his wife survived the fall with bruises.
The local search and rescue office, Basarnas, launched a search and found Nilesh's body some 1.2 miles from the shoreline the next day.
Iptu Widiono, head of public relations of the Klungkung Police Station, said: 'At around 12 noon, the Bali Police Directorate and the Bali Basarnas Team received information that Nilesh Mukhi had been found in the waters of Nusa Dua, about 1.5 miles from the coast. The victim was then evacuated to Tanjung Benoa Pier.
'With the discovery of the body that is strongly suspected to be the missing tourist, the official search operation was stopped. Nusa Penida Police personnel, Basarnas, and the Nusa Penida Navy Post also played a role in this search effort.
'In this case, we must warn tourists again that the location has a high level of danger. They should not go near the edge to take selfies or videos for social media. As has happened here, it can be highly dangerous.'
Nilesh's body was taken to the hospital for a post-mortem examination that confirmed he died from drowning.
It is the latest death at Angel's Billabong, which has been the subject of safety warnings for several years,
The beach is a scenic tide pool nestled between rocky cliffs on the southwestern tip of Nusa Penida island. The 'death trap' beauty spot is known for its Instagram-worthy natural infinity pool, though tourists are often warned of rogue waves that may thrash unsuspecting visitors against the jagged rocks or drag them out into the sea.
The most recent death was in 2018, when Chinese national Qiuwei Anhui, 46, was swept out to sea while taking a selfie.
A year before, Kiwi man Temson Mannie Junior Simeki, known as 'TJ', died after he jumped in to rescue his German girlfriend who'd been carried out by waves into the ocean.
The 23-year-old's girlfriend was rescued by an Australian snorkeller.
In 2016, Perth man Brad Williams had been walking near Angel's Billabong with his Balinese wife on their honeymoon and their eight-year-old niece when tragedy struck.
The beach is just one of several killer beaches along the Indonesian coast.
On October 13, a student was also washed away by a huge wave while posing for pictures at a notorious coastal spot in East Java.
Roni Josua Simanjuntak, 20, from North Sumatra, had been standing on wet rocks with several friends when the wave crashed into boulders sending whitewater rushing inwards at the Kedung Tumpang Beach in Tulungagung.
His friends, perched on the cliffs above, had laughed before realising the horror of the situation as the ocean dragged their pal out of the lagoon and into the open sea.
His body was found on October 18 off Karang Payung Beach, around 14 miles from where he had disappeared.
