China: Eastern province of Fujian becomes China's offshore wind power hub
China - October 27, 2024
Eastern province of Fujian becomes China's offshore wind power hub
(Voice_over)
China's offshore wind industry is ballooning as the country continues to lead the world in both offshore wind power and wind turbine manufacturing.
Off the coast of east China's Fujian Province, the world's first 16-megawatt wind turbine is in operation.
The mammoth turbine can produce about 66 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to power about 36,000 homes.
The turbine's manufacturer said large turbines like these are domestically designed and have been exported to countries like Turkey.

Xie Wei, manager, wind power plant:
"In our factory in Fuqing, we are currently focusing on manufacturing large megawatt offshore models. For the 16-megawatt model in particular, we have achieved 100 percent localization of core components."

China has by far the world's biggest wind turbine production capacity, accounting for 60 percent of the global market share.
Government officials said offshore wind power is expected to bring the winds of change to the country's energy sector.

Wang Zhong, deputy director, Fujian Provincial Development and Reform Commission:
"By vigorously developing wind power, we have provided strong support for green consumption and energy conservation and carbon reduction. Moving forward, we'll follow the national strategies to accelerate the development of deep-sea wind power based on our solid industrial foundation. We will work to transform Fujian into a clean energy hub in the future, making a greater contribution to clean energy development in the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the entire nation."

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that last year clean energy like hydropower, wind and solar power generated roughly 3.2 trillion kWh, accounting for about one third of the total power supply.
