This is the terrifying moment a sand tornado tore through a desert in the UAE.

The towering vortex filled the sky amid rainfall in Milehah, Sharjah, on October 23.

Footage shows the tornado spiralling across the desert and reaching up toward the dark clouds, with a sudden lightning bolt flashing nearby.

Dust storms typically last only a few minutes to an hour, posing serious risks for drivers and anyone outdoors during the storm.

Researcher Ghouse Basha said that dust storms can persist for about five to eleven hours.

Dust storms follow a distinct seasonal pattern, peaking in winter and hitting a low point in summer, with most activity occurring in March and April.
