Ten injured in Diwali travel chaos at railway in India
Ten passengers were injured as thousands rushed to travel home for Diwali Festival at a railway station in India.
Passengers raced to board train number 22921 from Bandra Station to Gorakhpur in Mumbai causing a frenzy that hurt some of them on October 27.
Chaotic footage shows stranded passengers waiting at platform one with some of them trying to squeeze through the overcrowded locomotive with their large bags.
Due to the rush, some of the commuters sustained wounds and leg fractures as well as spin injuries from being trampled on as they scrambled for a seat. Only two of the injured passengers have since been discharged by medics.
Footage shows Railway Police officers carrying those injured on stretchers made of cloth and sticks to be taken to hospital.
Local administration Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said in a statement: 'We attribute the incident to the bustling pre-Diwali festival preparations.
'Those who were injured were taken to Bhabha Hospital and the situation is now under control.'
During the incident, a train was rescheduled from 3 am to 5:10 am, causing severe overcrowding in the station due to delays.
India's trains are often overcrowded due to the country's high population density, which heavily depends on this mode of transportation. Many passengers opt for trains because they are more affordable than air travel and private vehicles. However, inadequate infrastructure and lack of awareness about ticket reservations contribute to the issue. Seasonal travel during festivals and holidays also worsens the issue as millions flock to their hometowns.
