United States - October 28, 2024

On October 28th, Colorado Parks and Wildlife released a captivating video of a bat gently flying out from under the hand of a man who freed it, shedding light on the misconceptions surrounding these often-maligned creatures.

In a statement, the agency addressed the popular myth that “bats are flying mice.” While both are mammals, they share little else in common; in fact, bats are more closely related to deer and moose than to mice. The wildlife experts further emphasized that portraying bats as pests is misleading, as these remarkable animals play a vital role in our ecosystem. A single little brown bat can consume thousands of insects, including pesky mosquitoes, each night, making them invaluable allies in natural pest control.
