US: Chinese UN representative urges greater efforts to cease hostilities in Sudan
New York, United States - October 28, 2024
A Chinese envoy to the United Nations reiterated on Monday that stronger efforts should be made to promote a ceasefire in Sudan through mediation and provide humanitarian assistance to the war-torn country.
Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement at the Security Council briefing on the situation in Sudan.
Eighteen months have passed since brutal fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The suffering is growing by the day, with almost 25 million people now requiring assistance, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in the meeting.
In his remarks, Guterres outlined three key priorities to protect civilians in Sudan. First, both sides must immediately agree to a cessation of hostilities; second, civilians must be protected; and third, humanitarian aid must flow.
Noting China has provided multiple batches of food and medical supplies to Sudan since the conflict began, Dai said the country is willing to continue helping Sudan ease the humanitarian crisis and play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability in the country.
The envoy called on the conflicting parties to put the interests of the country and the people first, replace military confrontation with political settlements, and return to the track of dialogue and negotiation to put an end to the fighting as soon as possible.
The Security Council should play a more positive role, Dai added, urging for stronger and concerted mediation efforts by the international community.

"China has noted the report of the Secretary-General on protecting civilians in Sudan. As the report said, the most effective way to protect civilians is to stop the conflict. China believes that the Security Council resolutions on ceasefire should be observed, the commitments made by all parties in the Jeddah Declaration should be fully implemented, the situation should be de-escalated as soon as possible, and the expansion of the conflict should be avoided by any means.";
