A car travelling through a fast lane suddenly stopped, causing a domino effect crash.

CCTV footage shows the vehicle hitting brakes on the right lane before being rear-ended by another at Phahonyothin Road in Saraburi province, Thailand on October 23 morning.

A third car halted in time and did not bump onto the car in front but a pickup truck behind him slammed onto its rear.

A sedan, fifth in line, rammed the truck and pushed it further onto the median.

A highway police officer who responded to the scene said: 'There was a small distance between each vehicle. It caused a traffic jam on the road.'

Other alert drivers quickly switched lanes, avoiding the pile-up.

No one was seriously hurt while the damaged cars were towed from the scene. Insurance companies were also called to assess and cover the damages.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
