Dozens of bikers were arrested for allegedly drag racing along a highway in Thailand.

The motorcycle riders reportedly gathered on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Bangkok to go on a joyride on October 24 evening.

Police said they found social media posts about the meet-up. They set up checkpoints and deployed 60 cops to the scene to detain the suspects.

Police Major Phuchong Maothung, superintendent of the Vibhavadi Rangsit Traffic Control Center, Expressway Division 2, said: 'We arrested a total of 68 offenders, of which 22 were found guilty of attempted street racing and driving without regard for safety. The group had both minors and adults. They will be sent to court for a trial in the morning.

'As for the other 46 riders, the police have issued fines in accordance with the Land Traffic Act for violations such as not having a license plate and illegally modifying their cars.'

Under Thailand's Land Traffic Act, motorists who gather to race, illegally modify their vehicles, or participate in 'suspicious activities' face penalties of up to three months in prison, a fine between 5,000 and 10,000 baht, or both.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
