Atlanta, United States - September 29, 2024 On September 29th, 2024, Atlanta Police Department (APD) officers and first responders successfully intervened in a tense crisis as they rescued a 16-year-old boy experiencing a mental health crisis from the ledge of a building at 795 North Avenue NE. Responding to reports of a suicidal person at approximately 4:16 p.m., officers quickly encountered a volatile situation when the distraught teen fled from his family and climbed to a nearby rooftop ledge. With the teen’s sister’s assistance in locating him, APD officers, together with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, accessed the rooftop using an exterior ladder, edging closer to a life-threatening situation. As the officers neared, the teen moved toward the building’s edge, heightening the intensity of the standoff. Remaining calm, officers patiently engaged with the boy, waiting for him to de-escalate and gain his trust. After a nerve-wracking period, officers persuaded the teen to step back from the ledge and safely escorted him to the ground, where EMTs administered care before transporting him to the hospital for further treatment.
