US: Pit Bull Attacks Officer During Owner's Arrest; Officer Attempts to Flee but Fatally Shoots Dog
Washington, United States - October 20, 2024 A Metropolitan Police Department officer fatally shot a pit bull during an incident involving the arrest of its owner on Sunday, October 20, 2024. The event unfolded around 12:50 PM in the 23100 block of 25th Street Southeast, when officers were called to check on an individual in crisis. Upon arrival, officers, alongside DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, attempted to persuade the individual to voluntarily seek medical evaluation. However, after unsuccessful attempts, it was determined that the individual would be involuntarily transported to the hospital. As officers were handcuffing the individual, the pit bull, which had been confined in a closed cage, broke free and charged into the stairwell, circling around its owner toward the officers. In a state of fear, Officer 1 drew their service weapon and discharged a single round at the approaching dog. The situation escalated as the officer fled, with the dog in pursuit. Involved Officer 1 tripped and fell, firing three additional shots at the dog, striking it twice. Despite the efforts to subdue the situation, the dog succumbed to its injuries at the scene.
