South Korea: Families of deadly 2022 Halloween crowd crush victims demand thorough investigation
South Korea - October 29, 2024 Families of the victims of the 2022 Halloween crowd crush in Seoul called for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible for the tragedy as they commemorated the anniversary with a memorial service on Tuesday. The crowd crush, one of the largest peacetime disasters in South Korea, resulted in the deaths of 159 people—many of whom were women in their 20s—and left 195 others injured as a dense crowd surged through a narrow, sloping alley in Itaewon, causing individuals to fall over one another. A memorial service was held on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of the incident. Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the South Korean National Assembly, attended the event, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, and vowed to do his utmost to uncover the truth behind the tragedy. Recently, many Koreans gathered spontaneously at the October 29 Itaewon Disaster Memorial Hall to mourn those who lost their lives in the tragedy. In May of this year, the South Korean government enacted the Itaewon Special Act, aimed at uncovering the truth behind the 2022 crowd crush and preventing similar incidents in the future. At the end of September, the Seoul Western District Court sentenced Lee Im-jae, the former chief of the Yongsan Police Station, and two emergency center personnel from the same station to imprisonment for three years to one year each due to their inadequate handling of the incident and professional negligence. However, other defendants in the case, including Pak Hee-yeong, the then chief of the Yongsan District Office, along with several district government officials, were found not guilty.
