Valencia, Spain - October 29, 2024 In a coordinated effort to assist those affected by the catastrophic DANA flooding, nearly 1,100 military personnel and 350 vehicles from the Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME) have been deployed across the region since Tuesday afternoon. The first responders were from the Third Intervention Battalion, based in Bétera, followed by additional units dispatched overnight to critical areas in the Valencian Community, including Requena, Utiel, Torrent, Paiporta, Xirivella, and Alaquas, as well as the town of Mira in Cuenca. In León, 119 personnel and 55 resources, including three drones and four rescue dogs, have been mobilized from the Ferral del Bernesga base to aid in rescue and evacuation efforts. Their primary mission focuses on locating and rescuing individuals, alongside distributing aid to the affected populations. Additionally, the Army has activated two helicopters from the Emergency Helicopter Battalion—a Cougar and an EC-135—under the operational command of the UME. The Air and Space Army has also deployed an NH90 helicopter and remains on standby with two more, prepared for further assistance. As floodwaters continue to pose a significant threat, these military operations underscore a rapid and robust response to a humanitarian crisis, with the safety and well-being of those impacted as the top priority.
