Phoenix, United States - June 16, 2024 A 10-year-old Chihuahua mix named Dorothea has found a loving forever home after being saved from a submerged shopping cart in the middle of a canal. The incredible June 16 rescue, coordinated by an Arizona Humane Society (AHS) Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ and the Phoenix Fire Department, was sparked by a Good Samaritan’s call alerting AHS to the dog’s dire situation. AHS EAMT™ Hunter Stribling and Phoenix Fire personnel arrived quickly, devising a rescue plan involving ladders and special equipment to pull the frail dog to safety. When finally ashore, the dehydrated, tick-covered pup showed her gratitude with wagging tails and cautious trust. Once assessed on AHS’s Pet Ambulance, Dorothea was rushed to the Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, where veterinarians found her in surprisingly good health apart from a few fractured teeth. During a month of care, including a thorough grooming, she quickly charmed the AHS team with her gentle, affectionate nature. Now settled in Youngtown, Arizona, Dorothea’s journey is a testament to AHS’s life-saving work, as the organization cares for nearly 22,000 pets annually. Her survival and adoption showcase the powerful impact of community support and the dedication of first responders.
