Miss Earth beauty queen hopefuls protest over plastic waste
Miss Earth beauty queens joined a hopeful protest against plastic waste in the Philippines.
The titleholders and the environmental network EcoWaste Coalition are calling for a waste-free celebration of All Saints and All Souls' Day in public and private cemeteries this year.
Footage shows the women participating in the campaign at the Manila North Cemetery on October 29.
Miss Earth beauty queens from the Philippines, Argentina, El Salvador, Liberia, Namibia, Nepal, the Netherlands, the Northern Marianas, Slovenia, and the United States participated in the activity, which was themed 'Cleanliness at the Final Resting Place, Respect the Environment.'
Manila's Office of the Mayor and Department of Public Services, the Manila North Cemetery administration, and the Metro Manila Development Authority supported the initiative.
Manila Public Information Office reported that last year, around 229 metric tons of trash, or 86 truckloads, were collected from October 28 to November 1 in Manila North and South Cemeteries.
Miss Earth is an annual international beauty pageant that promotes environmental awareness and advocacy. Contestants worldwide compete for the title to encourage sustainable practices and raise awareness about environmental issues.
