Madhya Pradesh Ajab Hai, Sabse Gajab Hai" (the state is strange, most amazing) - a popular slogan among the citizens of the state - has been re-enacted once again, this time in Ujjain district, where cows walked over men as part of their tradition.
This unique tradition took place in Bhidavad village of Badnagar tehsil, located 75 kilometers away from the district headquarters, on Saturday
The ritual is performed here on the morning after the Diwali festival, and the devotees believe that by following this ritual, their wishes will come true. According to locals, the cows were worshipped in the village in the morning, and then people lay down on the ground while the cows walked over them. People believe that 33 crore Gods and Goddesses reside in cows, and by allowing cows to walk over them, one receives the blessings of the Gods.

Rajoo Chaudhary from Bhidavad shares that this year, five individuals—Lakhan Agarwal, Radheshyam Agarwal, Ramchandar Chaudhary, Kamal Malviya, and Sonu Sisodia—fasted and laid down for the cows to run over them.
Every year, after Diwali, during Govardhan Puja, devotees lie down on the main road while a herd of cows is released to run over them. This centuries-old tradition evokes astonishment among all onlookers, as locals participate with deep faith.
"We have been following this tradition for generations. We believe that deities reside in cows, and lying under their feet brings us divine blessings," Rajoo adds.
With a population of around 4,000, Bhidavad attracts thousands of visitors for this unique event. Preparations begin early with Gori Poojan, where cows are bathed and decorated. After rituals at local temples, devotees participate in a procession before lying down for the cows to run over them.
This extraordinary tradition reflects the villagers' strong faith, as they believe that being beneath the cows brings blessings, leading to happiness and prosperity in their lives.
