Footage shows drivers battling through floods in Matsuyama, Japan, following heavy rain from the remnants of Typhoon Kong-rey that left large parts of the Ehime prefecture underwater on Saturday.

The country's Meteorological Agency reported that rainfall in the previous 24 hours reached a record 378 millimetres in Matsuura, Nagasaki Prefecture while nearby Hirado hit 369 millimetres.

Officials warned of landslides and severe flooding with evacuations underway in Matsuyama.

Typhoon Kong-rey lashed the Philippines before impacting Taiwan and moving onto the Communist mainland China where it was downgraded to a severe tropical storm.

Officials in Taiwan said that at least one person had died and 73 people have been injured in storm-related accidents.
