Valencia, Spain - November 01, 2024 The death toll from the flash floods devastating parts of eastern and southern Spain rose to 211, with the Valencian region, where the situation is most severe, reporting 208 deaths, according to data released by the Spanish government on Saturday. The flooding, triggered by torrential rain from an Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, has heavily impacted these regions. Search and rescue operations are underway in towns such as Benetusser in the Valencian region. Residents in Benetusser said there may be about 1,000 to 2,000 people missing. "In this same building, we lost a 19-year-old man who lived in the first floor, just down. And we have a mechanic here who was saved, that said he was hearing 'help, help, help' and knocking on the door but we couldn't hear anything, and it was completely flooded. The next morning, some local policemen and myself, we destroyed the gate and we found the man, drowned," said Daniel Gomez, a resident. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Saturday that an additional 5,000 soldiers and 5,000 police and Civil Guards would be deployed to the affected areas.
