STORYLINE:

The seventh China International Import Expo (CIIE) highlights China's commitment to global openness and willingness to engage in trade with countries worldwide, a Zambian economic expert has said.

Bernadette Deka-Zulu, founder of Shaping Futures Zambia, a non-governmental organization supporting youth involvement in policy, described China's move to embrace opening up as a significant step toward fostering a global environment conducive to free trade among nations.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BERNADETTE DEKA-ZULU, Founder of Shaping Futures Zambia
"Certainly, the China International Import Expo (CIIE) has offered itself as a leading example to bring about different countries and companies representing various regions as well. And this is now offering an openness of trade. China is saying we are ready for business with anyone."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): BERNADETTE DEKA-ZULU, Founder of Shaping Futures Zambia
"At last year's one, Zambia only had one company representing, but this time we have actually upscaled to nine companies.
The expo translates to the fact that we do have economic players. China being the major economic player right now is ready to open up other economies, such as the Global South, to increase visibility for developing countries. And also, it means that China has taken a deliberate step to also learn from other countries that are going to be at the expo in terms of how businesses are done, and also tapping into new, innovative ideas when it comes to enterprises as well as business."

Scheduled from Nov. 5 to 10 in Shanghai, the annual CIIE has, since 2018, supported international procurement, investment promotion, cultural exchange, and cooperative partnerships.
