This grizzly bear stayed calm while having a health check-up.

A veterinary team conducted a tri-annual wellness exam for Huckleberry, a 688-pound (312-kilogram) sedated bear, at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville, Washington.

Footage shows seven workers lifting the calm animal to examine his leg and performing an X-ray to detect any fractures or illnesses he might have developed over the years.

They also thoroughly checked his eyes, ears, and teeth, trimmed his nails, and collected blood samples.

Dr Allison Case, the park's head veterinarian, said: 'X-rays revealed the development of moderate arthritis in his right hind ankle, a lingering injury from 2020. Fortunately, our intra-articular gel treatment has alleviated his lameness and reduced his need for medications.'

The veterinarian added that the bear's health is stable.

Bears in captivity may exhibit abnormal behaviour like pacing, swaying, or bar-biting, which can indicate poor welfare.

Some zoos are now training bears to participate in their own health care, such as voluntary blood draws, which can help improve medical care and research.
