A drunk German biker was arrested for allegedly speeding past a traffic checkpoint and critically injuring an officer in Thailand.

Christopher Maximilian Walther, 29, from Dusseldorf, reportedly struck Police Sub-Lieutenant Rapeepat Prommin while escaping a sobriety checkpoint along Jomtien Road in Pattaya.

CCTV footage from the early hours of November 2 shows how the German driver on a Honda CB650 motorcycle hitting the officer, who suffered serious injuries when he landed on the pavement.

Christopher then abandoned the two-wheeler to flee on foot through the roadside as some 50 police chased after him. They detained him as he was emerging from Jomtien Beach.

The German allegedly refused to undergo a breathalyser alcohol test. He was taken to a hospital, where a blood test showed his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit.

Police said Christopher was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving causing property damage, physical and mental harm to others, fleeing the scene, violating traffic police orders, and resisting officers performing their duties.

Authorities said they have obtained CCTV footage and were identifying the owner of the rented motorcycle.

Police Major General Thawatchakiat Jindakornsanoong, commander of Chonburi Provincial Police, visited the injured traffic cop Rapeepat at the Pattaya City Hospital.

The police chief said: 'Lieutenant Rapeepat is an officer who performs his duties well. On the day of the incident, we were short on manpower so he volunteered to be stationed at the checkpoint. However, he was injured in the motorcycle accident.'

Lieutenant Rapeepat's wife said he was in a stable condition. However, he will stay at the hospital for a few more days to be monitored after suffering a brain haemorrhage and a bone fracture behind his nasal cavity.

Former fishing village Pattaya became popular with American troops on ‘rest and relaxation' breaks in the 1960s when Thailand provided military bases to the U.S. for their onslaught in Vietnam.

But in the ensuing years, locals flocked to the area to cash in on the demand for sex from foreigners and the coastal resort into the world's biggest sex destination.

Embarrassed officials have made some progress in gentrifying the region - it has multinational hotel chains and music festivals - but a ravenous nightlife industry fueled by drink continues to blight its reputation and safety.
