Beijing, China - November 04, 2024 The Israeli Foreign Ministry has notified the United Nations of cancellation of the agreement between Israel and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) signed in 1967, according to reports by Israeli media on Monday. The agreement serves as a foundation for UNRWA's operations in Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Last Monday, the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, passed a law prohibiting the UNRWA from operating in Israel. The law stipulates that the UNRWA will not operate any representation, provide services, or conduct any activities, directly or indirectly, within Israeli territory. A number of UN agencies and various countries have expressed their opposition, stressing that the UNRWA's work cannot be replaced. Established in 1949, the UNRWA is primarily responsible for providing humanitarian aid, education, and healthcare services to registered Palestinian refugees living in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.
