A teenage girl was rescued 22 hours after being swept away in a creek while taking selfies in India.

Hamsa Gowda, a chemical engineering student, and her friend Keerthana had the accident when they visited the Mydala stream near Mandaragiri Hill in Karnataka on Sunday, October 27.

While taking photos and videos of herself in the rocky gorge, Hamsa slipped and was carried away by the strong current.

Keerthana immediately called the emergency services. A team of 16 rescue workers from Tumakuru's Fire and Emergency Services and Kyatasandra police station arrived shortly after 2:30 pm local time.

The search had to be halted due to darkness at 8:30 pm.

The following morning, firefighters miraculously found Hamsa trapped in a waist-deep crevice, about 25ft from where she had fallen into the stream.

After hearing her cries for help, the rescue team extracted her from the crevice around 12:30 pm.

Hamsa told them she feared she would die if she had not bee found in time.

She said: 'I could not hear anybody so I feared I would lose consciousness and never be found. I kept praying for someone to find me.'

Following her rescue, Hamsa was given glucose and water before being transferred to a government hospital in Tumakuru for further evaluation and treatment for bruises all over her body.
